40:20 Haringey Climate Forum is about creating positive change, in our own lives and throughout the borough. It is a bold initiative – the target is ambitious, but it is achievable, and together we can make a difference. We already have everything we need to start creating a happier, healthier, greener, and more prosperous borough. Many people are doing this  – our families, our neighbours, local entrepreneurs on our high streets and volunteer organisations across the borough are already making great strides forward.

“The changes we make in our homes, gardens, workplaces and public spaces will make Haringey a better place to live and work. We can start creating the future we want to see right now.”

For inspiring ideas and to find out some of the many ways you can join the 40:20 HCF community in creating a better borough:

Here are some ideas of small ways to make a difference that 40:20 HCF members have had:

    • I will grow my own fruit and vegetables
    • I will convert more of my garden to food growing, and educate my children about where food comes from at the same time.

    Rory Bergin–N8

    • I will walk short journeys instead of taking the car
    • I will join a car club instead of owning a car

    Parvez–N17

    • I will recycle and buy recycled items
    • I will donate items I no longer need to others
    • I will cut down the amount of food I waste
    • My ideas:I shall avoid buying pre packaged foods. I will eat more British seasonal fruit and vegetables to reduce on carbon emissions through food miles. I will always make sure I carry a bag for life.

    Juanita Blake–N.17

    • My ideas:I will take my containers for washing up liquid and laundry liquid to be refilled at Fair Deal on West Green Road. I will buy my food from unpackaged on Amwell Street N1, (www.beunpackaged.com) re-using my own containers to buy foods such as pasta, rice and tea bags

    • I will recycle and buy recycled items
    • I will donate items I no longer need to others
    • I will cut down the amount of food I waste
    • My ideas:I will buy food every 2 days, and only purchase what I need for those meals.

    Jon–N10

    • I will measure my energy consumption and take steps to reduce it
    • I will find out if my home is suitable for solar panels
    • I will improve the insulation in my home

    James–N22

    • I will turn off the tap when I clean my teeth
    • I will only use the washing machine and dishwasher when full
    • My ideas:I will wash up in a bowl (rather than under a running tap).

    Natalie Butler–N22

    • I will buy Fair-trade products
    • My ideas:I’ve stepped it up a notch this year and am going to try and beat last years record of 10kg of potatoes from my little patch of Tottenham!

    Adam Parvez–N17,adam.parvez@haringey.gov.uk

    • I will recycle and buy recycled items
    • I will donate items I no longer need to others
    • My ideas:I will finally take my old clothes to a charity shop. I will try to learn how to sew properly so I can mend my old clothes rather than buy new.

    Alyssa–N22

    • I will measure my energy consumption and take steps to reduce it
    • My ideas:I will borrow an energy monitor from one of Haringey’s 9 libraries to monitor my electricity consumption.
